For centuries, the prospect of spotting a Bengal tiger in the wild has been a highlight of visiting India. Now the Government is to end the spectacle amid fears that the species is being “loved to death” by visitors desperate for a glimpse of tigers in the wild.

I started to get interested to foucs on cats and conservation in 2004 when I joined WWF Indonesia as a wildlife biologist. Currently I am the survey and monitoring coordinator at WWF. I am also enrolled as a PhD student at Virginia Tech, USA, studying the ecology of Sumatra tigers in the Riau Landscapes. Previously, I worked for Conservation International, Wildlife Conservation Society as well as ICDP Project. With WCS, I leas a team to build and manage the Way Canguk Research Station in BBS National Park in which study on large mammals, including tigers, was one of the programs.

I have been working as a field scientist and a conservation manager since 1993. I hold a master degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation at the Department of Natural Resources Conservation, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Massachucetts, USA, 2005. I am a leading expert at WCS-IP in Sumatran tigers and large mammal conservation, having led field teams and WCS-IP professional staff, and initiated several major projects of the organization since 1998. Today, I lead the WCS’ Tiger Forever initiative in Sumatra, WCS-IP’s island-wide survey for large mammals in Sumatra, and chair the HarimauKita, the Indonesia tiger conservation forum.
